In the fifties of the last century it was found that mammalian cells do not only need the 10 essential amino acids, but also cystine, tyrosine and glutamine. In addition to these three amino acids BME includes also eight B-vitamins. Originally BME was used for the cultivation of murine L-cells and HeLa cells. With its many variations it is used in many fields of science today. Along with the cultivation of normal mammalian cells BME is very suitable for transformed cells.
