IFN beta is produced by virus-infected fibroblasts and macrophages and probably, also from other cell types. Interferon-beta has antiviral, antibacterial and anticancer activities.
Interferon beta rec. is used as a drug against multiple sclerosis (MS). It slows down the progress of the illness, the frequency of exacerbation and decreases their degree of severity. Several studies provide evidence that treatment with interferon beta in patients with a first event suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) delays conversion to clinically definite MS (CDMS).
